Not at all. Diagnostic skin ultrasound is completely painless. A small amount of water-based gel is applied to the skin, and the probe is moved gently over the surface. There are no needles, no pressure, and no discomfort. Most patients find the procedure relaxing. The gel is wiped off at the end, and you're ready to go.
Standard hospital ultrasound typically uses 3.5–7.5 MHz probes designed for imaging deep abdominal organs. Skin ultrasound uses high-frequency probes of 15–22 MHz or higher, which provide much finer resolution for superficial structures like the epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous fat. This level of detail is essential for accurately characterising small skin lesions, cysts, and lumps. Additionally, at Dr. Pang Skin Clinic, the scan is performed and interpreted by a dermatologist — not delegated to a radiologist days later.
Ultrasound cannot definitively diagnose cancer — only a biopsy and histopathology can do that. However, ultrasound is a powerful tool for risk stratification. It helps assess lesion characteristics such as irregular margins, internal echoes, shadowing, and abnormal vascularity, which can indicate whether a biopsy is warranted. If Dr. Pang identifies any concerning features, she will discuss a clear next-step plan with you, including referral for biopsy if clinically indicated.
No referral is required. You can book directly with Dr. Pang Skin Clinic. Many of our patients self-refer after noticing a lump, growth, or skin change they want assessed. If you have been referred by another doctor, please bring any previous notes or imaging so Dr. Pang can review them alongside your scan findings.
Very little preparation is needed. Simply ensure the area of concern is accessible — wear loose or easily adjustable clothing if the lump is on the trunk or limb. Do not apply thick creams or ointments to the area on the day of the scan. No fasting is required. The entire appointment, including consultation and scan, typically takes 30–45 minutes.
Yes. Ultrasound-guided procedures allow Dr. Pang to visualise a lesion in real time during removal, ensuring complete excision with minimal disruption to surrounding tissue. This is particularly useful for deep or irregularly shaped cysts, lipomas adjacent to important structures, and foreign body removal. If ultrasound-guided surgery is required, Dr. Pang will discuss this with you and schedule the procedure at the most appropriate time.
